How can I tell if the old motor had broken down?

The washing machine was working fine until half way through the wash at which point it just stopped and all the lights went off. I tinkered about around the motor; taking off plugs and re-fitting them etc. I also tightened up the wires to the brushes and when I put the machine back together it worked and finished the load. I then filled the machine up again to do a second load but it was completely dead. Is this the motor or is there something else that could be wrong. G
