I don't think there is anything blocking the connector. I've pushed in the tube as far as it will go but it still leaks. Is there a special technique or could the fitting have been damaged when i pulled out the old tube that was split in the first place?

There is not a special technique, as long as the tubing is all the way in the connector it should be watertight but if the fitting is damaged inside it would allow water out.
