How to Clean Your Lawnmower

Lawnmowers can be tricky to clean. In this article, we're going to provide some helpful tips on how to clean an electric lawnmower and advice on how to clean a petrol lawnmower. Read on to find our video and step by step guide.

Safety first!

Before you begin, make sure you're wearing protective gloves whilst cleaning your lawnmower.

If your lawnmower is electric, you're going to want to unplug the cable from the mains socket before you start cleaning, and make sure you don't use water during the cleaning process. Also unplug the flex cable from your lawnmower itself, if you are able to.

If your lawnmower is petrol, be sure to switch off the engine to give your lawnmower a chance to cool down, as well as detaching the spark plug.

How to clean your lawnmower step by step

Let's get started! To learn how to clean your lawnmower, simply follow the how-to video or the step by step guide below.

Electric lawnmowers

Electric lawnmowers are relatively low maintenance but they do require regular cleaning. Most people are unsure of how to properly clean them because of the dangers of mixing electricity and water. See below our steps on how to safely clean your electric lawnmower.

Step 1: Remove dried-on dirt and grass

Using a stiff, dry brush, scrub away any dirt and grass from your lawnmower's exterior and housing cover.

Step 3: Wipe down your lawnmower

Wipe down your mower using a damp, wrung-out cloth. The cloth should not be dripping, as only a minimal amount of moisture is needed. Take care to avoid the motor and switches, and avoid using cleaning products as they can damage your lawnmower.

Petrol lawnmowers

Petrol lawnmowers are very powerful and great for larger lawns. To keep yours in the best possible condition, read our steps below on how to clean your petrol lawnmower.

Step 1: Remove dried-on dirt and grass

Using a stiff, dry brush, scrub away any dirt and grass from your lawnmower's body. You'll find dirt and grass in and around the air intake, cooling fins, exhaust, fuel filler caps, cables and links.

How often should you clean your lawnmower?

Regularly cleaning your lawnmower will help make sure that it runs efficiently and stays in good shape so you can keep your lawn fresh through summer. Your lawnmower should be cleaned before your first mow of the season and should be repeated at least twice during the spring and summer months. It's a good idea to also give it a clean before you put your mower away for winter. If you find you need to mow very long grass or your lawn is still slightly damp, you may need to do this more often.
