If you have a household appliance that has stopped working and you're not sure what the issue is, don't panic. A multimeter is a great tool for helping you diagnose problems with electrical appliances so you can get them up and running again. In this article, we'll introduce you to multimeters and explain how to diagnose appliance faults using a multimeter.

How a multimeter works

A multimeter is a versatile tool that can be used to measure electrical resistance within a circuit, just as you would use a ruler to measure distance. It can be used to test most electrical components inside an appliance to determine whether or not they're faulty. These parts include elements, thermostats, switches and more, so you can find out which part has failed and is in need of replacing.

Multimeters come in two different types; digital and analogue. Depending on which multimeter you own or purchase, you may have to set up and calibrate the multimeter before using it. Don't worry though, because this isn't complicated and your multimeter's manual will run you through the setup in no time.

To learn more about using multimeters for specific faults, head over to the eSpares YouTube multimeter playlist where we have various video guides on using multimeters for a range of faulty appliance diagnoses. We'll help you get to the bottom of your electrical appliance issues in no time!

Once you've used a multimeter to diagnose a fault in one of your appliances, you will likely need a spare part or two to replace the faulty ones. Head to our online shop and we'll help you find whatever spares you need to get your appliances ticking again!
