How to Replace a Fridge Door Seal

If your Neff fridge isn't reaching the correct temperature and you can feel cold air escaping, it could be due to a faulty door seal, also known as a gasket. If the door seal is damaged or torn your fridge won't be able to maintain its temperature properly and will need to work harder as a result. This can lead to higher energy bills, as well as food potentially not being stored at the correct temperature, so you will need to replace the gasket to get your refrigerator working optimally again.

Fortunately, this is a fairly simple replacement that you can carry out at home by yourself, as long as you know which steps to take. So read on for our guide on how to replace the door seal on a Neff fridge and we'll get your appliance back up to scratch in no time. This particular guide is for Neff fridges, but the process should generally be the same for most other makes and models.

If your freezer door seal is in need of replacing instead of your fridge door seal, head over to our freezer door seal replacement guide for a step-by-step run-through of the process instead.

How to check for a faulty door seal

There are a few ways to determine if your fridge's door seal is faulty. First, you can simply inspect it for any rips or tears. If you find any, the seal will need replacing. You can also try running your hand around the door frame. If you feel cold air escaping through the seal, this will also indicate that the seal is no longer working properly.

Finally, you can place a £5 note between the edge of the door and close the door over the note. If the seal holds the note firmly in place, then the seal is working fine. If the note falls or is easy to pull out without any resistance, however, then this will indicate a faulty seal that will have to be replaced.

Finding your model number

Before beginning this replacement, you will need to find your fridge's model number to make sure you buy the correct door seal for your particular appliance. This number will be displayed on a sticker or data plate, usually on an internal wall inside the fridge or behind the vegetable drawer. The model number may be a combination of letters and numbers and could also include other characters such as a dash (-) or a slash (/).

Safety first

Remember, always make sure your appliance is switched off and unplugged from the wall before carrying out any repairs or part replacements.

Step 1: Remove the old door seal

While some seals need to be cut away from the door, the seal for this particular fridge can be removed a little easier. All you need to do is simply pull the door seal away from the door by hand to remove it.

Step 2: Clean beneath the door seal

Before fitting the new gasket, it's a good idea to clean the door frame beneath the seal first. Use a cleaning spray and cloth to give the frame a wipe down and remove any potential mould or grime build-up.

Step 3: Fit the new door seal

To fit the new door seal, press it into place on the frame. Start at the top corner then work all the way around, pressing firmly as you do so to ensure the seal is firmly in place on the frame.
