Washing Machine Drum Not Turning

When the washing machine is down, washing your clothes can seem like the end of the world, if washing by hand it can be very time consuming and exhausting. With our washers being used daily they can submit to faults. If you’ve gone to check on your washing only to see the drum in the same position you left it in, then you may have an issue with the drum not moving.

If your washing machine shows no signs of movement, let us talk you through the most likely causes for a washing machine to not turn and get you fixing your appliance so that it’s spinning again.

Drum Belt

The drum belt is the connection between the motor and the drum, which operates throughout the complete wash cycle. It is fitted onto the motor and the pulley which turns the drum, without the belt the machine will not turn. Over time it is quite common for the belt to snap due to wear and tear.

If you’ve put in a load of washing expecting clean clothes, the last thing you want is the washing machine drum to not turn. Follow these simple steps to diagnose your drum belt for faults.

Safety First! Please make sure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before beginning any repair.

  • Gain access to the back of the washing machine and remove the back panel.
  • Locate the drum belt, check the belt for any signs of damage and replace if required.

If the drive belt has ruptured and is in need of replacing, check our online shop for a new washing machine drum belt and get your machine spinning again.

For general guidance on how to remove and replace a faulty drum belt, click the 'How To >' button below. However, we also have a guide showing you how to remove the belt specifically on a Hoover washing machine, so if you own a Hoover washer, follow this guide for the most accurate guidance on carrying out a belt replacement instead.

Carbon Brushes

Another part that can prevent the machines drum from turning is the carbon brushes. If your washing machine is not turning the drum when it’s filled with water or on a spin cycle the problem can be due to worn motor brushes.

Safety First! Please make sure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before beginning any repair.

  • Depending on your model, remove the backplate to access the motor
  • Once you have access remove the motor
  • Check for wear on the carbon brushes and replace if required.

If replacement brushes are required, don’t forget to see our extensive range of spare parts for your washing machine here.
