will replacing a broken housing fix tank not filling

My tank does not collect water, when trouble shooting i noticed that 1 of the prongs has snapped of the water tank valve housing. I can sometimes get the tank to fill by jamming a peg underneath the tank and using a brush up against the tank door. Would you think replacing the broken housing will correct this?

We think the prongs are just to locate and hold the container in place. However, there is likely to be a valve to prevent leaking and this may not be opening if the container is not fully seated correctly. So replacing may resolve the problem.
