How a Trimmer Works

When it comes to trimming the edges of your lawn, or areas around steps and washing lines, it’s advisable to use a grass trimmer. Using a short nylon line, which spins at high speeds reaching up to 10,000rpm can help provide a clean and straight cut.

Pulling the trigger switch on the grass trimmer’s handle activates the electric motor - this then spins the rotating head. As the head spins, a length of nylon line wrapped on a bobbin scythes grass.

Only the section of nylon line protruding from the rotating head is used for cutting, whilst a guard plate protects the user from injury.

As the worn line snaps, a fresh length must be fed from the bobbin, although some models have an automatic feed system. To see how easy it is to fit a new spool and line, see our guide here.
