I bought this for my sister who is finding it difficult to operate. In particular she cannot invoke subtitles.

The remote should function in the same manner as the original so the units instruction book should cover all the functions.
my old remote is black and is the original one that came with the freeveiw recorder,

The record button is on the bottom left. This is an exact replacement but is not an original remote. It should operate all the functions that the original controlled.
