Is it just a quarter twist anti clockwise and pull out? Managed to twist left a bit then not sure what to do as seems still locked in place.

If the filter turns and sticks it is likely to be jammed with debris like coins or cotton buds or hair clips. Remove the pump from the hoses to allow any debris to be shaken out through the hose entrance and the filter should then be removable.
If the original filter in the machine was the black one, can you use the white one as it fits exactly? Thank you 1 Answer

If it fits and does not leak or stop it draining yes. These 'filters' are only there to catch hair grips and other debris left in pockets and often do no stop the machine form being blocked by debris.
