How to Replace a Lawnmower Switch - Bosch

If the switch on your Bosch lawnmower is broken or damaged, you'll need to replace it to get your lawnmower back in action once more. Fortunately, this is a replacement you can carry out at home by yourself, as long as you know which steps to take. In this article, we're going to show you how to replace a Bosch lawnmower switch step by step.

The lawnmower we're using for this replacement is a Bosch Rotak 40, but the process should generally be the same for most Bosch lawnmowers.

To make sure you purchase the correct replacement switch for your particular lawnmower, you'll first need to find your appliance's model number. The model information for your lawnmower should be on a sticker or rating plate which will be either on the back of the appliance, the underside, the chassis or the grass box. The model number will consist of letters and numbers and could also include other symbols such as a slash (/) or a dash (-). Now remember, safety first! Always make sure your lawnmower has been switched off and unplugged from the mains before carrying out any work, replacements or repairs.

First, you will need to remove the switch housing from the lawnmower handle. To do this, unscrew the two screws at the bottom of the housing where it connects to the lawnmower's handle.

With the screws removed, you should be able to remove the bottom part of the housing (the part against the handle from which you removed the screws).

You can then pull the housing off the handle before twisting it 90 degrees to remove it from the control bar.

Once you have the switch housing free of the lawnmower, unscrew the three screws on the face of the housing. This will allow you to get inside the housing.

Once the screws have been removed, lift away the half of the housing from which you removed the screws. Inside, you will be able to see the on/off switch. Before proceeding any further, it's important to take note of how the cables are positioned inside the housing. We recommend taking a photo to use for reference throughout this process.

You can then lift the switch and all of the connected cables out of the housing entirely.

The wires that come from the cables and are connected to the switch are very tightly held in place. To remove them, use a pair of pliers to very gently but firmly pull the wires out of the switch. If you do happen to damage the wires, you can always simply strip back the cable further with a pair of wire strippers to expose more undamaged wire.

With the old switch removed, you can now fit the new one by reattaching the wires into the same places on the new switch. Remember to use your photo to refit all the wires into the correct places if necessary. Once all the wires have been fitted into the switch, give each wire a little pull to make sure they're firmly locked in place.

You can now slot the new switch back into the housing, making sure you also push the cables back into their correct places too.

Then fit the housing back together over the switch and cables and secure it by returning the three screws you removed earlier.

Once the housing is reassembled, you can start reattaching it to the lawnmower handle. First, fit it back onto the control bar and twist it in place. Then reattach the small bottom panel to the housing before screwing it back onto the handle.

And there you go! How to safely and securely replace a Bosch lawnmower switch. Your lawnmower should now be back in action once more!
