Hotplate Element Not Heating Up

A common cause of a hob plate not heating is a faulty element. Following our steps below; you may be able to identify the offender and we’ll have you cooking in no time.

• Check if one or all of the elements are failing to heat up. If there is no power to the hot plates check to see if the lights on the control panel are working.
• If there are no lights and no heat at all the fault lies with no power, take a look at the fuse and power supply to your hob, this may have blown resulting in no power to your elements.
• If the switch is working and the power light is shining brightly the fault is likely to lie with the hotplate element.

Safety First! Please make sure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before beginning any repair.

You can test the element for faults by checking its resistance using a multimeter, you will be looking for a reading of 30-300 Ohms. For an understanding of how to use a multimeter, you can see our multimeter guide.

If you suspect your selector switch to be faulty, these simple checks will help you diagnose the problem:

• This type is a six position adjuster that controls each ring. Depending on your model it may use a variable switch to cycle power to the hotplate if this is your type see the energy regulator information. 
• Occasionally liquids may splash, spill or boil over the pan, making its way into the switch causing the fault.

To inspect the switch:.

• Examine the switch contacts and connectors for any signs of burning or damage to the wires and replace if required.
• If you find no visible damage, you can also test the switch with a multimeter to determine whether or not it's faulty and needs to be replaced.

If you suspect your energy regulator to be defective - located behind the cooker’s control knob on the fascia panel, follow our guide to help you diagnose and fix the problem swiftly:

• Some models use this small device to adjust the power being sent to the hotplates or cooking rings and even to grill elements. When you vary the position of your control knob it will adjust the power to the cooking zone.
• Occasionally your favourite pasta sauce or rice may leak out the pan and trickle its way into the energy regulator causing damage.

To inspect the regulator:

• A faulty regulator may either turn to full power or not turn on the power and will not regulate at the selected setting.
• Examine the energy regulator for any signs of burning or damage to the wires and replace if required.
