Washing Machine Is Not Finishing

Washing machines allow us to effortlessly wash and clean our clothes, be it a work uniform or your favourite “night out” outfit. The washing machine obviously needs to finish its washing program so you can remove the garments before then getting on the way to drying them.

If your washing machine is not finishing its cycle and continues to throw the garments about the drum; then you’re going to struggle to remove your now clean clothing.

To help identify the causes we have investigated the more common faults which may arise and may be the reason you are experiencing this issue with your appliance.

By reading the remainder of this article we may be able to get your washer back to running and finishing as is it should.

Heater

When your washing machine is failing to finish its wash cycle, it is recommended to check the heater. If the heater - also known as a heating element has failed then you can perform a few checks to confirm the fault.

The washer needs to reach the correct program temperature to perform the complete wash cycle - if the element is faulty leading to it not heating correctly the appliance may continue to run.

Safety First! Please make sure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before beginning any repair.

  • Accessing the washing machine’s heater, you need to check for damage, this can be identified by loose or burnt connections.
  • If there is no visible damage, use a multimeter and check for resistance. (See here for instruction on how to use a multimeter)

A perfectly working heater will give a typical reading of between 20 - 30 Ohms.If the resistance is far higher or gives no reading then the heater has failed and will require replacing.

Drain Pump

The washing machine needs to drain the water for it to finish the program. If this is not happening, you could be faced with a faulty drain pump. In this case, you will likely need to replace the drain pump to get your appliance working properly again. Fortunately, we have a couple of articles to help you fix this issue.

Safety First! Please make sure that you have switched your appliance off at the mains before starting your repair.

It's always a good idea to make sure your drain pump is faulty before going ahead and replacing it. That's why we have a guide on how to use a multimeter to test a washing machine drain pump, which will help you determine whether or not the pump is actually faulty before removing it and fitting a new one.

If a replacement is needed, head over to our extensive range of spare washing machine pumps to get the replacement you need.
