Product Q&A

Ask a Question

I have had a few Hotpoint cookers in the past and have never had the grill elements bend down like this. I have a job trying to push the grill pan back in with anything on it. We have only had the cooker for about 18 months.

  • Our grill element was drooping so badly we could hardly get the grill pan into it. I was just about to book a repair and then thought i may as well try bending it back into place. It's almost as good as new now, no repair man needed. Just make sure everything has cooled down. By Darren McCoy - Northern Ireland - 10 July 2019
  • There is another reason for the element to bend down. Sometimes the metal linking strip, across the element, moves forward on the element. This means that the retaining lugs on either side no longer engage correctly with the sides of the grill, leaving the element with no support except at the back. So it sags down (sometimes quite a long way) at the front. You can try to slide the metal strip back along the element, but it's probably stuck. In that case, replace the element. Grille elements frequently work when the metal is glowing cherry red or red hot. At this temperature the metal is approaching its melting point and it is not unusual for an element to droop in this manner. If this distortion is significant then it will be necessary to replace the element.

The most likely problem would be the thermostat so start there but also check for any signs of damage or burning to the element and switches.

The grill element can usually be removed from inside without taking everything apart, there should be screws going through the element holding it on.

You will need to check the switch and thermostat, test the element with a multimeter to determine if it has failed.

The problem could be the element or the control. Examine the non working element carefully for signs of damage that may show it has failed.

Answer this question

I have a built in double oven, when I turn the grill on nothing works, the light on the button doesn’t come on and the heating element don’t work, but when I turn the top oven on this works but then if you turn the grill on again the light with the button comes on but the heating element still don’t work? So would this just be the grill element that needs replacing?

If the element gets hot the problem may be the oven/grill selector switch.

From the parts image it appears the fixing holes do not have screw threads so we believe if this is for your grill it should be able to be removed from within the cavity. This can be confirmed by looking for the screw heads on the bracket.
